In 1832, Auguste Agasi of Switzerland started a watch business in Saint-Imier, which was then continued by his nephew Ernest Francillon, who opened a watch factory in LesLongines, Switzerland, in 1866. 1867 saw the establishment of Francillon's "Longines" company. In 1867, Francillon's "Longines" company was founded and the Longines brand was born, with the launch of the first Longines model, the L20A, in the same year. 1867 onwards, every Longines watch was engraved with a winged hourglass.
Officially a registered trademark in Switzerland in 1880, Longines is one of the oldest trademarks in the Swiss watchmaking industry, and the first Longines watch was awarded a prize at the Antwerp International Exhibition in 1885. Since then, Longines has won several international awards, including a record 10 consecutive Greenwich Medals.
The pocket watch was gradually replaced by the wristwatch in the 20th century. 1905 saw Longines manufacture its first mechanical watch, and in 1912 it brought elegant geometric design to the watch industry with the introduction of the highly innovative square wristwatch, and in 1912, at the Federal Games in Basel, Switzerland, Longines became the first watchmaker to produce an automatic timekeeping device.
